01 · The 3-Second War

60 billion messages a day.
You get three seconds.

Brendan Kane calls it the 3-second world. In his book Hook Point, he shows the feed hits people with 60 billion+ messages daily, and the brain decides in under three seconds whether to stop or scroll. His formula is brutally simple — Disrupt, Engage, Educate: break the pattern, spark the feeling, then deliver value fast enough that they stay. Every hook in this Codex is engineered to win that first three seconds, again and again.

DISRUPT

Break the scroll pattern. Say the thing the feed didn't expect.

ENGAGE

Hit a nerve — curiosity, loss, identity, secret.

EDUCATE

Pay off the promise fast, so the next hook is trusted.

02 · The Physics of Attention

Nine engines.

A hook is not a lucky sentence. It's a trigger pull on a wired mechanism in the brain. Learn the engines and you stop guessing.

1

Curiosity Gap

Loewenstein's information-gap theory: reveal enough to open a question, withhold the answer. The gap itches until it's closed.

2

Open Loop

The Zeigarnik effect: the brain remembers unfinished stories and refuses to let them go. Start the story, delay the ending.

3

Loss Aversion

People feel a loss ~twice as hard as a gain. "This will cost you money" out-pulls "save money" almost every time.

4

Negativity Bias

Threats get priority processing. "What to avoid" beats "what to do" in most A/B tests. "You're doing X wrong."

5

Pattern Interrupt

Novelty spikes dopamine. The unexpected word, the visual anomaly, the claim that shouldn't be true — the brain snaps awake.

6

Reactance / Negative Space

Tell someone this isn't for them and they lean in to prove it is. The disqualification hook — the whole §04 doctrine.

7

Self-Relevance

The brain's radar for "this is about ME." Age, identity, a habit they have right now: "If you're over 30…"

8

Authority + Secret

Insider knowledge you "weren't supposed to see." Forbidden + credible = irresistible. "I shouldn't be saying this."

9

Social Proof Tremor

"Nobody tells you this" implies everyone else is in on something you're not. Fear of being the last to know.

04 · The Negative-Space Doctrine

The hook that works by
what it doesn't say.

Every list teaches you to shout louder. This chapter teaches the opposite — the whisper, the withheld, the deliberate push-away. In design, negative space is the emptiness that gives a subject its shape. In persuasion, it's the line that pretends to send people away — and pulls them in twice as hard.

REACTANCE

Why "not for you" works

Psychological reactance: when a freedom feels threatened — including the freedom to belong — people move to restore it. Tell them they might not qualify and they lean in to prove they do. Nike ran a whole Olympic campaign on it: "Winning Isn't For Everyone."

THE WITHHOLD

Say less on purpose

A blacked-out word pulls the eye harder than a bold one. The reader's mind rushes to fill the blank — and a mind filling your blank has already stopped scrolling. Tap the bars:

The one thing killing your engagement is the thing you do first.

TAKE-AWAY

Alan's line

"I don't know if this is for you, but…" is a perfect negative-space hook. It hands the reader an exit — and the exit is the invitation. It lowers the sales guard (no pressure) while the open loop ("but…") keeps them reading. Permission to leave is why they stay.

THE 5 NEGATIVE-SPACE MOVES
1. Disqualify — "This isn't for everyone. If you want it easy, scroll on."
2. Permit exit — "I don't know if this is for you, but…"
3. Withhold — "Most of you will skip this. Good."
4. Understate — "This probably won't change your life. Probably."
5. Redact — "You weren't supposed to see [   ]."
